The most skillful apprentice at the Yoshioka Doujou, Ueda is first seen beating other students down. Miyamoto Musashi 宮本武蔵 enters the scene in cognito as Kiryuu Kazumanosuke 桐生一馬之介, seeking enrollment in the school. But, in order to get the attention of the teachers, he will have to first fight this brute.
It turns out that Ueda and Gion Touji 祗園藤次 are preparing to overthrow the current heads of the Doujou, Yoshioka Denshichirou 吉岡伝七郎andYoshioka Seijuurou 吉岡清十郎. They hatch a plan to pit Seijuurou, the skilled brother, against Miyamoto Musashi and kill the survivor of the duel. At the same time, they will kill the brother who can't use a sword, Denshichirou, at another location.
It is Ueda who waits in the fields where Musashi and Seijuurou have their duel. Before Musashi can get to the place where Touji has gone to kill Denshichirou, he will have to defeat Ueda and the other students of the Yoshioka Doujou.
Ueda is another character who appears in the book "Miyamoto Musashi" by Yoshikawa Eiji, and again in certain retellings of the tale (including the manga "Vagabond"). But, there is little evidence to suggest that Ueda actually existed.
